day 3 vatican museums and a long walk in the trastevere district. |
on a bridge over the tiber river on our walk to vatican city |
outside the vatican walls |
the vatican museum was probably one of our favorite things from the whole trip. the pictures, as usual, just don't do it justice.
the walk up to the dome of st. peter's is quite the trip! the passageway is extremely narrow and winding. they had many warnings for people with heart problems, but we laughed afterwards that the real risk is for people with claustrophobia. we were a little winded once we got to the top, but the view was worth it!
inside st. peter's basilica |
you aren't allowed to take pictures in the sistine chapel, but that was definitely our favorite part of the vatican museums. we were able to spend about an hour in there, just looking up at the ceiling and the walls. it was incredible. i felt like every time i looked up, i noticed something different. the paintings are so beautiful that they look almost three dimensional. our audioguide mentioned that michelangelo was reluctant when the pope commissioned him to paint parts of the sistine chapel because he felt like he was better at sculpture. this kind of made us laugh while we were looking at the masterpieces in front of us. later, in st. peter's basilica, we came across pieta (below), and thought, "yeah, maybe he was right..." this sculpture was so moving to see in person. it depicts jesus in the lap of his mother after the crucifixion.
