day 2
we knew we had a packed israel trip next, so we tried to pace ourselves as much as possible in rome. our first morning, we explored a bit more and tried to get familiar with our surroundings. we stayed near campo di fiori and were able to walk everywhere! the location was perfect. after a little exploring, we made our way to the roman forum and colosseum. we bought our tickets in advance and i am so glad we did. even during off season, the lines were long.

i was sure to wear my gold leaf headband to make me feel a little bit more like a gladiator at the colosseum. ;)
we learned that the colosseum took about 7 years to build, and was paid for largely by the fall of jerusalem in 70 a.d. - a perfect precursor for the next leg of our journey.
the underground tour at the colosseum was really neat. this is where all the work was done. gladiators, animals, slaves, and more were held and worked underneath the colosseum floor. elevator systems would lift the gladiators and animals from below onto the floor through trap doors, making it seem like they just appeared out of thin air -- or dust.
